Foundations in Mauritius are governed by the Foundations Act 2012. They are commonly used for wealth management, succession planning, charitable activities or for commercial purposes alongside the conventional company structure, trusts, and limited partnerships. Foundations are similar to trusts but they have legal personality like a company. Property is vested in the foundation by a founder and a council manages the affairs and administers the property of the foundation in accordance with a charter. The foundation may also have beneficiaries if the Charter so permits.
